    Książka […] opowiada o rezultacie spotkań badaczy z uniwersytetów w Hamburgu, Warszawie, Poznaniu i z PAN, podczas których uformowała się w dyskusji ważna i trudna materia, dotykająca „historyzacji” tego, co pamiętane. A ściślej pamiętania Zagłady w dwóch, mocno splecionych rodzajach przedstawień. To znaczy w organizowanych wokół dyskursu postkatastroficznego realizacjach memorialnych; w pomnikach, muzeach, osobach-świadkach (ich „pomnikowa” rola), również w literaturze, w plastyce, w filmie – także w swoistych derealizacjach pamięci, tzn. w memorialnych przedstawieniach, które coś ukazując, coś innego (albo to samo) zacierają, wypierają, redefiniują, reorganizują i – w istocie – dokonują zabiegu anestezji/amnezji. Uśpienia prymarnej pamięci, jej u-nieistotnienia. A definicyjnie trafny tytuł, wiążący miejsca pamięci i niepamięci (to coś innego, niż nie-miejsca Marca Augé), wskazuje na rozmaite praktyki historyczne tego pamiętania/uniepamiętniania i na całą sferę osnuwanych wokół zaburzania pamięci takich praktyk-obrządków, motywowanych różnie, psychospołecznie (wyparcie, poczucie winy) i historycznie (tzw. konkurencja pamięci), i religijnie („rywalizacja” martyrologii), ale zawsze ważnych i zawsze też dalekich od politycznej niewinności. (Prof. Andrzej Zieniewicz) The book [...] recounts the result of meetings of researchers from the universities of Hamburg, Warsaw, Poznań and the Polish Academy of Sciences, during which an important and difficult matter was formed in discussion, touching on the 'historicisation' of what is remembered. Or, more precisely, the remembering of the Holocaust in two, strongly intertwined types of representation. That is, in the memorial realisations organised around a post-catastrophic discourse; in monuments, museums, witnesses (their "monumental" role), also in literature, art, film - and also in specific derealisations of memory, i.e. in memorial representations that, by showing something, erase something else (or the same thing), suppress, redefine, reorganise and - in essence - perform an anaesthesia/amnesia procedure. The dormancy of a primordial memory, its u-essentialisation. And the definitionally apt title, linking sites of memory and sites of non-remembrance (something different from the non-places of Marc Augé), points to the various historical practices of remembering/non-memory and to the whole sphere of such practices and rituals wrapped around the disturbance of memory, motivated in various ways, psychosocially (denial, feelings of guilt) and historically (the so-called competition of memories), and religiously ("competition" of martyrology), but always important and always far from political innocence. (Prof. Andrzej Zieniewicz)

    Nasza pamięć (indywidualna, rodzinna, środowiskowa...), pamięć każdego, kto nie dosięga PRL-owskiego doświadczenia, wydaje się trwale podzielona - i to w obu naraz znaczeniach tego słowa. Po pierwsze dlatego, że rozdziela, odróżnia, izoluje to, co jest prawdą naszego doświadczenia, od doświadczenia będącego (ponoć) powszechnym udziałem - i to ostatnie kontestuje, subwersywnie podkopuje, rozkłada na zatomizowaną konstelację indywidualnych przypadków czy świadectw. Po drugie, jest to jednak przecież pamięć podzielona z innymi - w tym sensie, w jakim podziela się czyjś los czy czyjeś zdanie; a więc taka, która ma udział, która uczestniczy w ponadjednostkowym, a może też i w jego wytwarzaniu... Wygląda, że wszędzie tam, gdzie - jak to w kulturowej pamięci i kulturze w ogóle - nie potrafimy oddzielić "nagich" faktów od ich wartości i znaczeń (tego, o czym sądzimy, że się wydarzyło, od tego, co się faktycznie wydarzyło), ustalić, czym naprawdę było to, co było, tam więź jednostkowego i wspólnotowego nie tworzy homogenicznej całości, lecz raczej rodzaj węzła czy splotu, w którym odmienności i powinowactwa są nawzajem dla siebie czynnikiem zarazem jedności i odróżnienia; czynnikiem, który antagonistycznie spaja podzieloną wspólnotę naszej pamięci. (prof. Ryszard Nycz) Our memory (of an individual, of the family, of a circle, etc.), the memory of every person who did not experience the Polish People’s Republic, appears to be permanently divided, in both senses of the word. Firstly because it divides, differentiates, isolates that, which is the truth of our experience, from the (supposedly) common experience: and it contests the latter, subversively undermines it, dismantles into an atomised constellation of individual cases or testimonies. Secondly, it is also a memory divided between us and others, in the way one can share their fate or opinion with others; and therefore, it is memory which participates in the beyond-the-individual, and perhaps even in the creation of it… It would appear that in instances where (as is the case in cultural memory and memory as a whole) we cannot separate ‘naked’ facts from their value and meanings (that which we believe to have happened from that which really happened), establish what ‘what was’ really was, that is where the connection between the individual and the communal does not form a homogenic whole, but rather a kind of knot or tangle, in which differences and similarities are a factor of togetherness and otherness for one another; a factor which merges together, antagonistically, the divided community of our memory. (Prof. Ryszard Nycz).

    Authors: Krasuska, Karolina;

    Radzieckość i amerykańskość to pola znaczeniowe, które rzadko zazębiają się w polskich wyobrażeniach, a raczej stale opierają się na pozimnowojennym binaryzmie. Tymczasem literatura będąca tematem niniejszej książki konfrontuje z sobą obrazy, mity i fantazmaty dotyczące Stanów Zjednoczonych z jednej strony oraz Rosji i Związku Radzieckiego z drugiej. Sovietness and Americanness are semantic fields which rarely mesh together in Polish imaginings, but rather they are continually based on the post-Cold War binarism. The literature which is the topic of the present book, however, confronts the images, myths and phantasms relating to the United States on the one side, with those of Russia and the Soviet Union on the other.

    Authors: Małczyński, Jacek;

    Jean-François Lyotard porównał Zagładę do trzęsienia ziemi o tak wielkiej sile, że zniszczeniu uległy nawet wszelkie sejsmografy, które mogłyby posłużyć do oszacowania skali zniszczeń. Porównanie to zyskało sławę i było często przywoływane w kontekście dyskusji na temat możliwości reprezentacji Zagłady, które zdominowały studia na jej temat na przestrzeni ostatnich trzydziestu lat. W ciągu ostatnich dekad powstały liczne prace odsłaniające polityczny, społeczny i kulturowy wymiar Zagłady. Aspekt środowiskowy tego wydarzenia nie został jednak dotychczas dostatecznie zbadany. W książce autor postuluje otwarcie się studiów nad Zagładą na historię środowiskową oraz ich włączenie w trwające aktualnie debaty na temat zmian klimatu, zrównoważonego rozwoju, wymierania gatunków, klęsk ekologicznych czy migracji klimatycznych. (fragment "Wprowadzenia") Jean-François Lyotard likened the Holocaust to an earthquake of a magnitude so great, that it destroyed even the seismographs, which could have served to estimate the scale of destruction. This comparison has become famous and would often be referenced in the context of discussions on the possible ways of representing the Holocaust, which have dominated Holocaust studies over the last thirty years. In recent decades, many works have been developed which reveal the political, social and cultural dimensions of the Holocaust. The environmental aspect of this event, however, has not been sufficiently studied to date. In this book, the author stipulates an opening of Holocaust studies to environmental history, and their inclusion in current debates on climate change, sustainable development, extinction of species, ecological disasters, or climate migrations.

    Authors: Kobielska, Maria;

    Zamiarem Marii Kobielskiej było – najogólniej rzecz ujmując – stworzenie mapy polskiej pamięci kulturowej po 1989 roku, mechanizmów jej przekształceń, sposobów wpływania na nią i głównych aktorów, którzy są w te praktyki pamięciowe zaangażowani. Wybrała w tym celu trzy centralne dla tego pola wydarzenia z historii Polski XX wieku: zbrodnię katyńską, powstanie warszawskie i stan wojenny – ze względu na ich rozpoznawalność, wyjątkową liczbę tekstów kultury, które się do nich odnoszą, intensywność polityk pamięci, które je kształtują. Zbadany przez autorkę obszar konstytuuje kluczowe dla zrozumienia działania tego pola punkty: dominanty szeroko pojmowanej polskiej pamięci kulturowej. The aim of Maria Kobielska was (in the most general sense) to create a map of Polish cultural memory after 1989, of the mechanisms of its transformations, ways of influencing it and the main actors involved in these memorial practices. For this purpose, the author chose three events from Polish twentieth-century history, which are central to this field: the Katyń massacre, Warsaw Uprising and martial law. These were chosen due to their recognisability, the extraordinary number of cultural texts relating to them, and the intensity of the politics of memory they are shaped by. The range examined by the author constitutes aspects which are key to the understanding of this field: modal values of the widely-understood Polish cultural memory.

    Struktura świadectwa i pozycja świadka są od niemal trzech dekad przedmiotem pogłębionego namysłu badaczy i artystów. Niewątpliwie to studia nad Holocaustem i związany z nimi zwrot etyczny przyczyniły się do tego w największym stopniu, co nie oznacza, że Zagłada i genocyd były w zakresie jedynym przedmiotem analizy. Niniejszy tom wieloautorski pod redakcją Agnieszki Daukszy i Karoliny Koprowskiej wnosi w ten kontekst związany z kolejnymi, utrwalonymi fazami humanistycznych dyskusji teoretycznych wątki nowe, jeszcze nie eksplorowane. Zgromadzone tu teksty zdają sprawę z zasadniczej zmiany w rozumieniu pozycji świadka w kulturze w relacji do świadectwa oraz do parezji. Wcześniejsza semantyka zaświadczania, zogniskowana wokół i na figurze ocalałego, włączała w swój porządek nader często także: oskarżanie, upominanie się o sprawiedliwość, zwracanie się przeciw krzywdzącemu jako już-nieobecnemu, dając mu przewagę moralno-epistemiczną. Obecnie już nie antyteza mówienia i języka jest, jak się wydaje, kluczowa u świadka (jako nieludzkiego i postludzkiego), ale naruszanie przez świadectwo uzgodnionych kolektywnych reguł prawdo-mówności. (Prof. dr hab. Tomasz Majewski) For nearly three decades now, the structure of testimony and the position of witness have been the topic of deep reflection by scholars and artists. Holocaust studies and the related ethical turn have undoubtedly contributed to this to the greatest extent, although it does not mean that the Holocaust and genocide were the only topic of analysis. This multi-authored volume, edited by Agnieszka Dauksza and Karolina Koprowska, brings new, still unexplored threads into the context of successive, established phases of theoretical humanist discussions. The texts collected in this book present a significant change in the understanding of the status of a witness in culture, in relation to testimony and parrhesia. Earlier semantics of testifying, centred around and on the figure of the survivor, often also included the following in its order: accusations, calls for justice, coming out against the wrong-doer as now-absent, giving them a moral-epistemic high ground. Nowadays, it is not the antithesis of speaking and language that is, as it would seem, crucial to the witness (as non-human and post-human), but it is the testimony’s violation of the agreed, collective rules of truth-fulness. (Prof. Dr hab. Tomasz Majewski)

    Authors: Łysak, Tomasz;

    Documentary materials shot during the war by Nazi cameramen came to define the audio-visual memory of Polish Jews in the ghettoes, and Auschwitz-Birkenau liberation footage became a powerful symbol of the Holocaust. Polish documentary filmmakers had relied on these materials in order to present various aspects of the genocide, Nazi atrocities, and the fate of Jews under the occupation. Subsequently, quoting of archival footage lost its appeal and other modes of documentary filmmaking now prevail: cinematic memory work (in response to Alain Resnais's Night and Fog), audio-visual testimony, documentaries of return, etc. The book traces these developments and adopts a comparative perspective, showing Polish productions in the context of a larger international phenomenon of Holocaust cinema. The argument combines insights from psychoanalytical trauma theory, generic criticism, memory studies, and political aesthetics. Niemieckie materiały dokumentalne na długo określiły wizualną pamięć o polskich Żydach w gettach, zaś radzieckiekadry z wyzwalania Auschwitz-Birkenau stały się symbolem Zagłady. Polscy dokumentaliści korzystali z tych materiałów, aby pokazać różne oblicza ludobójstwa, zbrodnie nazistowskieoraz losy Żydów podczas okupacji. Z czasem przywoływanie materiałów archiwalnych straciło na znaczeniu, a inne tryby dokumentalizmu wysunęły się na pierwszy plan: filmowa praca pamięci (w odpowiedzi na Noc i mgłę Alaina Resnais’go), świadectwo audiowizualne, dokumenty o powrocie itd. Niniejsza monografia prezentuje te zmiany, a także przedstawia polskie filmyna tle szerszego, międzynarodowego tłafilmów o Zagładzie (Holocaust cinema). Aparat pojęciowy obejmuje psychoanalityczną teorię traumy, krytykę genologiczną, studia nad pamięcią oraz estetykę polityczną.

    Co humanistyka może zaproponować w kwestii zwierzęcej, czego nie umożliwiają ani etologia, ani ewolucjonizm, ani nauki przyrodnicze? Co istotnego oferują badania kulturowe, czego nie wyczerpuje etyka praw zwierząt ani socjologiczne badania ludzko-zwierzęcych relacji? Co wnoszą studia nad zwierzętami, czego brakowało zarówno w dotychczasowym modelu uprawiania nauki, jak i w społecznych ruchach na rzecz zwierząt? What can the humanities offer on the issue of animals, which neither ethology, nor evolutionism, nor natural sciences make possible? What important things can cultural research offer, that is not exhausted by animal rights ethics or sociological studies on human-animal relations? What is contributed by the studies on animals, which was lacking both in the previous model of practicing science, and in the social movements on animal rights?

    Authors: Ubertowska, Aleksandra;

    Celem, jaki stawia sobie autorka, jest opisanie trzech odrębnych zjawisk w piśmiennictwie o Zagładzie, których status można określić jako kontrowersyjny badawczo, peryferyjny, a co się z tym wiąże, zmuszający do dokonania istotnych rewizji w obrębie przyjętych rozstrzygnięć badawczych: eseistyki, literackiego zapisu kobiecego doświadczenia Zagłady i autobiografii historyków Holokaustu. W każdym z omówionych przypadków w odmienny sposób zdefiniowano marginalność/niekanoniczność analizowanego zjawiska. W pierwszej części kryterium różnicującym jest klasyfikacja genologiczna utworów, ich usytuowanie na mapie gatunków dominujących w piśmiennictwie o Zagładzie. W części drugiej marginalność ma wymiar genderowy, zarówno w odniesieniu do doświadczenia granicznego, jak i tekstu. Autorka poddaje tu analizie kobiece autobiografie czasów wojny, a także postmemorialne utwory autorek „drugiego pokolenia literatury i sztuki Holokaustu”, zadając pytanie o stosunek tych dzieł do androcentrycznego tekstu wojennego. Wreszcie, w części ostatniej kryterium badawczej peryferyjności czy marginalności definiowane jest jako skomplikowanie relacji podmiotowo-przedmiotowych określających pozycję badacza, którą znamionuje uwikłanie w przedmiot naukowego namysłu. The aim of the author was to depict the three separate phenomena in the writings on the Holocaust, whose status can be seen as scholarly controversial, peripheral, and, what is related to this, it also forces one to make substantial revisions within the agreed-upon research findings: of essay writing, of the literary record of the women’s experience of the Holocaust, and of autobiographies of the historians of the Holocaust. In each of the cases discussed, the marginality/non-canonical nature of the analysed phenomenon was defined in a different way. In the first part of the work, the differentiating criterion was the genological classification of pieces, their location on the map of genres dominating the writings on the Holocaust. In the second part, marginality assumed a gender aspect, both in relation to the limit situation and to the text. The author analysed women’s wartime autobiographies here, as well as the post-memorial pieces by women authors ‘of the second generation of literature and art of the Holocaust’, posing a question about the relationship of these writings to the androcentric war text. Finally, in the final part, the criterion of scholarly peripherality or marginality was defined as a complicating of subject-object relations, which determines the stance of the researcher, and which is characterized by being embroiled in the topic of scholarly reflection.

    Ciała zdruzgotane, ciała oporne są pracą o kapitalnym znaczeniu dla współczesnych badań humanistycznych w Polsce, pracą jednoznacznie wpisującą się w "zwrot afektywny", który dokonał się w humanistyce światowej już jakiś czas temu, ale też ujmującą zagadnienie afektów na swój własny, oryginalny sposób. Chodzi nie tylko o krytyczną refleksję wobec różnych nurtów myślenia o afektach, ale też lekturową egzemplifikację powiązaną ściśle z historią. Jest to praca, która po raz pierwszy na gruncie krajowym podejmuje tę problematykę na taką skalę i zarazem praca, która w oparciu o wypracowane przez silnie zróżnicowany zespół badawczy podstawy teoretyczne proponuje szereg nowatorskich lektur różnorodnych tekstów, które pozostawiły swój trwały ślad w kulturze XX wieku. Przedmiotem rozpraw składających się na ten tom jest estetyka afektywna, która traktuje dzieła nie jako obiekty odizolowane, ale raczej kładzie nacisk na ich charakter intertekstualny, czy nawet "pan-inter-tekstualny", jak powiada we Wstępie Marek Zaleski, na ich uwikłanie w rozległym gąszczu różnorodnych zakamarków kultury. Podstawową zasadą czytania w każdym tekście jest to, że reakcja afektywna zostaje wysunięta na pierwszy plan i staje się ważniejsza od znaczenia komunikatu. Takie podejście, opierające się na hermeneutyce afektywnej, przybliża odpowiedź na pytanie o zasadniczym dla całego projektu znaczeniu: jak działa dzieło sztuki? Czytanie afektywne sprawia, że dzieło sztuki staje się wydarzeniem, które zwykle wstrząsa tradycyjnym systemem wiedzy, opartymi na nim przyzwyczajeniami i schematami. Redaktorzy i autorzy tomu słusznie podkreślają polityczny kontekst tej książki - cielesność i opresję ciała opanowanego przez reżymy znaków w społeczeństwie totalitarnym i demokratycznym. (Prof. Adam Dziadek) The triad of history (both History and (micro)history), body and affect provides a framework for interpretations gathered in this book. Addressing literary, cinematic and artistic depictions of affective encounters between an individual and the flow of history, the authors attempt to provide descriptions of both the bodies shattered by historical discipline, and those which resist the imposing mechanisms of the historical machine. Literary and cultural scholars, art historians and philosophers, whose essays are presented in this volume, have decided to take an interest in affects not only in order to immerse themselves in the reflection on the crisis of representation which has animated critical thought in the humanities in the last few decades. They all turn towards a material, somatic experience of history and towards history understood as event and/or trauma. Affective aesthetics do not approach analysed objects as isolated or closed works, but rather, they uncovers their pan-intertextuality and the complex and convoluted paths of their influence on both individual and cultural reception. The notion of representation is replaced here by that of figuration. Affective perspective allows one to interpret works of literature and art in a new way, or rather, it opens up a possibility to reach, with the help of new, more adequate tools, for that which has long been of interest to cultural analysis. It leads one towards new readings/analysis, as well as to the new concept of historicity enriched by the powers of imagination. (Prof. Adam Dziadek)

    Authors: Krasuska, Karolina;

    Authors: Małczyński, Jacek;

    Authors: Kobielska, Maria;

    Authors: Łysak, Tomasz;

    Authors: Ubertowska, Aleksandra;
